The difference between the plumber you might use for your home and a construction pipefitter is a lot like the difference between a home electrician and an electrician who works in construction. In the construction field, these professionals are primarily involved with building the systems from the ground up using blueprints rather than fixing leaky pipes.

Like electricians on a job, construction pipefitters work from plans and lay out and install plumbing and pipe for everything from massive underground water mains and drainage systems to waterlines and plumbing throughout a building.

The more uses and demands put on different piping systems, the more specialized this field becomes. Steamfitters for example, generally only work on systems designed to carry gases or liquids under high pressure. It is as important to follow plumbing codes as it is to faithfully complete project plans.
