In construction, the mechanic's job is very different from that of the mechanic who fixes the family car. Heavy construction equipment isn't just much larger than your average automobile, but often relies on complex hydraulic and electronic systems and most commonly- diesel power plants.

In this day and age, mechanics often use computers and electronic systems to diagnose and fix problems with the equipment they're responsible for. This equipment and on-board computers used on many pieces of today's heavy equipment means a construction mechanic needs good computer skills.

Keeping a construction fleet up and running and in top shape requires the construction mechanic to have specialized expertise. Because of tight construction deadlines and the punishment heavy equipment undergoes on a job site, Construction Mechanics have to be able to mount and coordinate a mobile response that quickly and efficiently puts a disabled machine back online to keep a job on track.
