Types of Construction

Construction work can be grouped in major categories: Building, Highway/Bridge, Heavy/Industrial, Utility and Residential. Each type of construction requires a company to be capable of certain specialty work at a certain level of workforce and fleet. Different construction specialties require different workforce skills - building contractors employ electricians and structural steel workers, while earthmoving companies employ more heavy equipment operators and truck drivers. Many Maine construction companies often specialize in a single focused area of construction.

While technical demands may differ with construction specialty, how projects are managed and the rigorous emphasis on safety are the same across all of the trades and disciplines of the construction field.

Building

The many materials and systems that go in today's buildings often mean that numerous skilled specialty workers are needed from dozens of trades to successfully complete a project. You will find everything from hoisting and moving equipment to structural steel workers, carpenters and welders on a building construction jobsite.

Highway/Bridge

From the ground up, road and bridge work require the coordination of a wide range of construction engineers and trades people to ensure that the layout and design perfectly match the territory, that environmental impacts are addressed, and that roads and bridges not only are smoother to drive on, but durable and safe. Surveyors with lasers and satellite-guided heavy equipment deliver work with more speed, efficiency and accuracy than ever before.

Heavy/Industrial

Heavy/Industrial construction differs from building construction in scale and requirements. This industry services the needs of manufacturers and other major commercial clientele to build high-tech facilities with specific demands for systems and services to meet their needs. These are often large scale projects that as likely will pull from the engineering ranks of major equipment manufacturers as they are to employ an army of structural steel workers to finish the job.

Utility

In addition to building and repairing dams, power plants and other energy-producing facilities, utility construction firms often work on large, multi-state projects involving construction of power lines and transmission corridors, as well as laying pipelines for gas or oil. Scale is an important aspect as many successful utility contractors have multi-state operations and employ hundreds or even thousands of workers.

Residential

The residential market has seen a marked increase in construction activity over the past few years and shows little sign of letting up. In addition to single-family housing, residential construction also includes apartments, condominiums and renovations to existing dwellings. Numerous construction crafts are utilized in residential construction, from masonry and carpentry to plumbing and roofing.
